Paragraph of the Week – 06/12/2021

The quote for this week’s Paragraph of the Week-

“The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.” -Mark Twain (author)

The question that should be answerd, based on this quote is-

Do you agree with this quote? Why or why not? Provide an example from your own life that supports your reasoning.

My Paragraph of the Week

I don’t agree with the quote that is mentioned above because I think that cheering someone else up might make you feel good about yourself for doing something nice, but it probably wouldn’t cheer you up. If other people tried to cheer me up, it would probably work better than me trying to cheer other poeple up so I can get cheered up myself. I rememeber once, me and my friend both got hurt and we were sad. My friend was more sad than me, and I was trying to cheer her up. It had a small effect- I managed to cheer her up, but it didn’t cheer me up. Than, as a payback, she tried to cheer me up, and this was the point where I got cheered up- when she was the one cheering me up.

Paragraph of the Week – 29/11/2021

The amazing quote this week is-

“If nature has made you for a giver, your hands are born open, and so is your heart; and though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you can give things out of that – warm things, kind things, sweet things – help and comfort and laughter…” –A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The paragraph of the week should be a respond to that-

Brainstorm ways you can be a ”giver” and create a list of small, random acts of kindness and love that you can perform during the month of December. Choose one of the acts and explain in detail how you will do it and who may benefit from your act of kindness.

My Paragraph of the Week

There are so many small, random acts of kindness and love that you can perform. Here are just three ideas of kind acts that we can all perform in our free time:

  1. Baking a big amount of cookies and give them out to the homeless people.
  2. Clean the street that you live in (pick up litters, pick up the leaves).
  3. In the morning, hold the door in the entrance to the school instead of the teacher who stands there and tell “good morning” to the students who come in.

I want to focus on the first idea and explain it in details because that’s the idea that I connect to more than the others. I know that as a thirteen-year-old girl, I can’t just save the homeless people, buy them house, and give them food, but I can just do a little act that would make them a little happier and that would make them a little less hungry. Baking cookies, then walking around the area where you know that the homeless people stay, and giving each of them 3 cookies is not going to save their life, but it might save their day, it might make just one day out of their hard life a bit easier, and it might give them a little more hope.

Paragraph of the Week – 15/11/2021

This week, our Paragraph of the Week’s quote is-

“Courage is…knowing you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” –To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

The question for this week is-

When have you had to demonstrate bravery and courage? What is the hardest thing about having courage?

My Paragraph of the Week

It was hard for me to think of a situation where I had to demonstrate bravery and courage because most people would probablt talk about ziplining, Halloween haunted houses, and this type of stuff, but I am usually not scared of these stuff, and therefore I don’t feel brave after experiencing these adventures. But like everyone else, I do have things that I am scared of. For example, a year and a half ago, when I moved to Canada from Israel, I was kind of terrified. New country, new language, new school, new teachers, and the most terrifing- new friends. But going through it, slowly slowly, I made progress. I was so quiet when I just started school, I barely spoke. But now, a year and a half later, I talk as much as any other girl. And to get to the place I am at today, I had to be brave. Every day, I had to get over my fears, and talk a little more. And today, I don’t even need to think about it before I talk to the other girls. I think that the hardest thing about having courage is actually using it in the most important situations. You need to use your courage when you are scared, which is what makes it hard to use your courage. When you are scared, or stressed out, it makes it harder to think straight and use the courage that you have. I got it, though. I know I have courage, so I just hope that I will always be able to use it when it’s actually necessary.

Paragraph of the Week – 1/11/2021

Just like any other Monday, we need to write the Paragraph of the Week. This week our quote is-

“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” – John Muir (naturalist and author).

The question we need to answer this week is-

Describe a place that you have traveled to that you hold close to your heart. What is so special about this place? (It doesn’t have to be a vacation spot. Some of the most special places may be close to home!)

My Paragraph of the Week

I have traveled to 7 different countries in my life. All of them such beautiful countries. Such beautiful views. Such beautiful nature. But from all the places I have traveled to, the place that I hold close to my heart more than I do with any other place, is actually about 5 minutes away driving from my house. It’s my grandparents’ house. Right now, that I am in Canada, it might be at the other side of Earth, but at the end of the year, when I go back to Israel, it will be 5 minutes away again. It’s a special place for me. A place where I feel comfortable, a place where I feel loved, and a place where I would always want to be. You don’t need to travel to the other side of earth to find a special place, a place that you hold close to your heart. Sometimes this place is closer than you think.

Paragraph of the Week – 25/10/2021

Every monday we will need to write the Paragraph of the Week. This week our quote is-

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference.” – “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost.

The question we need to answer this week is-

Do you consider yourself someone who takes “the road less traveled”? That is, are you an independent, free thinker who wishes to pave your own roads? If so, describe an experience in your life that demonstrates this characteristic. If not, why do you prefer to take “the road more often traveled”?

My Paragraph of the Week

I consider myself someone who takes “the road less traveled”. I am an independent, free thinker who wishes to pave my own roads. Last year, for example, I wanted to run for Jewish Life because I wanted to be activie and involved in school, and what’s a better way to do that than join student council? I know that most people who just arrived from Israel, and don’t speak English perfectly would think it’s a bad idea to join the student council and stand out in school. But not me. And even though my parents told me I should wait another year until my English gets better, I am a free thinker. So I ran for Jewish Life anyways, and I was chosen! Thanks to the fact that I am someone who takes “the road less traveled”, I got what I wanted, and was involved in the school through the student council. This is just one of the experiences in my life that demonstrates this characteristic.

Paragraph of the Week – 18/10/2021

Every monday we will need to write the Paragraph of the Week. This week our quote is-

“Leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today.” – Abraham Lincoln (16th president of the United States).

The question we need to answer this week is-

Are you a procrastinator or do you prefer to budget your time and get your tasks done in an efficient and organized manner? Explain how this affects you as a student in terms of assignments and projects.

My Paragraph of the Week

I am one of these people who really likes to budget their time and get their tasks done in an efficient and organized manner. This habit makes my life as a student much easier. I know that a lot of students procrastinat a lot of their projects and assigments. They start working on the assigment the night before, rush it through, and go to bed at a very late hour. I, on the other hand, really hate it. I like taking my time, start working a long time before the assignments and the projects are due, and go over them over and over again, until I think it’s perfect. I think that this habit gives me a better chance to get a good mark and do a better job on my school work. The conclusion that I am drawing is that all students should budget their time. This will give them more time to upgrade their work which will get them a better mark.

Middle School Retreat 2021

September 13-15th were the three days of our middle school retreat. They were 3 days of so much fun!

On the first day, we started off at Carlington Park with a few activities and games that helped the students from the different classes to get to know each other. We got a yummy breakfast that the school provided and then, we got to Marked Obstacle Course and did a bunch of fun and challenging obstacles. Next, we got on the buses and returned to the school. We had a great dinner prepared by our teachers – delicious BBQ! Lastly, we had a fun activity that me and my classmates from grade 8 led.

The second day was also amazing! Maybe even better than the first day. We were at school, half asleep, at 6:30 am, which was very early, but worth it. We got on the buses and after an hour and a half, we finally were in the rafting site. When we finished to get ready, we hopped on the boats and started paddling. It was awesome! After a few hours of paddling we stopped on a small island and had sandwiches that the school gave us for lunch. The warm fire pit was a nice addition. Then we continued rafting until we were back on the beach and changed into dry clothes.

The third day was a short day because it was Erev Yom Kippur. We had activities and games in school until 12, and then we went home.

This year’s Middle School Retreat was an amazing experience that made me return home with a smile on my face every day. I had so much fun and I am so happy I got to experience all of those activities.

Paris

Currency Conversion

Recently, in our math class, we learned about financial literacy, for example, accounts, managing money, being financially literate, etc. We also learned about currency conversions, and as our final project, we made a currency conversion calculator. In our days, coding is such a great skill for each of us and I am glad I got the opportunity to learn how to code. I liked following the steps accurately until finishing the code and have it working. Coding is fun but very complicated. Every tiny mistake can ruin the whole code. For example, if you write “Change” with a capital c instead of “change” with a lowercase c, the whole code might not work. This is actually what happened to me. A challenge that I had to go through while our final project was finding those mistakes. After finishing coding, I saw that my app does not work, even though I have all the text that I need to have. Thanks to Mrs. Clevelend, our math teacher, who helped me find the tiny mistake, my code is now working!

So, if you ever need to convert money from one of the 5 most common currencies used across the globe, to Canadian dollars, you can always use the app that I coded! Here is the app-
